Basalt Distillery is an award-winning spirits producer based on Northern Ireland’s rugged north coast, just minutes from the iconic Giant’s Causeway. Founded by chemical engineers Martha Garbe and James Richardson, Basalt represents a bold reimagining of modern distillation—fusing scientific precision, environmental responsibility, and geological provenance into every bottle.
At the heart of Basalt’s process lies a 600-foot-deep spring borehole, drilled through the ancient volcanic rock that forms the Giant’s Causeway itself. This basalt acts as a natural filter, enriching the water with mineral purity and geological character—an origin story that is both literal and powerful. It is this water, millions of years in the making, that forms the foundation of the distillery’s signature spirits.
Basalt’s flagship expression, Basalt Volcanic Rock Gin, is a citrus-forward, juniper-rich spirit elevated by locally foraged botanicals such as kombu royale and sea buckthorn. The result is a gin of layered complexity and exceptional clarity—one that earned a prestigious 3-Star Great Taste Award in 2025 and Gold at The Spirits Business Gin Masters.
Their second release, Basalt Volcanic Rock Vodka, continues the pursuit of purity and smoothness. Twelve-times distilled using advanced closed-loop technology and finished with bamboo charcoal filtration, the vodka delivers a rich, velvety mouthfeel and a long, clean finish. It was recently awarded a 2-Star Great Taste Award in 2025.
Sustainability is core to Basalt’s ethos. From lightweight aluminium eco-refills to fully recyclable gift packaging and energy-efficient distillation systems, every step of the process is designed to minimise environmental impact without compromising luxury.
