PGI Olive oil
)
A quality label granted by the European Union, indicating that the olive oil is closely linked to a specific geographical area.
Unlike PDO, not all stages of production must occur within the region. At least one essential step (such as cultivation, processing, or preparation) must happen there.
This allows for more flexibility: olives may come partly from outside the area, but the oil’s reputation, characteristics, or quality must still be strongly associated with that region.
PGI guarantees traceability and authenticity, protecting the name of the product against misuse or imitation.
Labels on PGI oils always mention the registered geographical name.
In short: PGI olive oil ensures regional identity and quality, but with less strict rules than PDO, making it more accessible while still offering a certified link to tradition and place.
