The Small Independent Retailer of the Year Award in partnership with BIRA is presented to a pioneering retailer at the heart of their community. They provide exceptional customer service and run new, exciting initiatives to help future proof the sector and brings the community together in their local area. The winner is a forward-thinking retailer, a real advocate for independent businesses, and leads by example to push for change and development for the industry on key agendas.

Criteria: 

  • Could have more than one site but entire business must fall within the below parameters
  • Below £500k turnover annually and/or
  • Must have 10 or fewer employees (FT equivalent) working within the business
  • Must be independently owned and managed

Judging Criteria:

Our judges have selected their top four finalists from our entries, now the power is in the publics hands. The winner will be announced on Tuesday 10th September at Speciality & Fine Food Fair.

The Cheese Lady

At The Cheese Lady, they prioritise connection, wellbeing, and excellence. They stock products from artisan producers committed to sustainability and support local charities. Since 2017, they’ve raised thousands for causes like ‘Blooming Haddington’ and sponsored the Haddington Pipe Band and have donated a percentage of revenue to the Mental Health Foundation since 2017.

Forest Deli

Community is central to Forest Delis’ mission. They support local businesses, sponsor events and charities, and maintain a local-first policy. They partner with local producers and provide essential services, including free local delivery. Previously recognised as an Inspirational Cheese Retailer of the Year and honoured with the Pride of Coleford award for their contributions.

The Norfolk Deli

The Norfolk Deli champions local products by sourcing over 70% from Norfolk producers, including cheeses, wines, and jams. They offers these products online via "Norfolk's Online Farmer's Market" and hosts the West Norfolk Seasonal Food & Drink Festival. Known for its artisanal cheeses and Norfolk-made gift hampers, the deli blends tradition with innovation.

Cheese Etc, The Pangbourne Cheese Shop

Cheese Etc, The Pangbourne Cheese Shop, is a rare gem in a small village, prioritising community needs. Showcasing independent, local artisan products, including cheeses and giftware. They support nearby artists and producers, often visiting farmers' markets to find new artisan suppliers. Their philosophy is to prioritise quality, bringing the best products to their customers, at the best possible price
