The Large Independent Retailer of the Year Award in partnership with BIRA is presented to a pioneering retailer at the heart of their community. They provide exceptional customer service and run new, exciting initiatives to help future proof the sector and brings the community together in their local area. The winner is a forward-thinking retailer, a real advocate for independent businesses, and leads by example to push for change and development for the industry on key agendas. 

Criteria: 

  • Can have more than one site but entire business must fall within the below parameters
  • Above £500k turnover annually and/or
  • Must have 11 or more employees (FT equivalent) working within the business
  • Must be independently owned and managed

Judging Criteria:

Our judges have selected their top four finalists from our entries, now the power is in the publics hands. The winner will be announced on Tuesday 10th September at Speciality & Fine Food Fair.

Low Sizergh Barn

Low Sizergh Barn, a family-run organic dairy farm with a café and farm trail, supports over 50 local businesses and employs more than 50 people. They host Growing Well, a social enterprise supporting mental health recovery, and champion independent growers, makers and producers. Their farm-to-fork philosophy emphasises local and seasonal sourcing

The De Beauvoir Deli

For over 5 years, The De Beauvoir Deli has donated dairy to the Arc Foodbank and 5% of profits to local charities. They support community initiatives, including the De Beauvoir Association. Known for homemade jams, chutneys, and patisseries, they emphasise sustainability with biodegradable packaging and free-range meats.

Cobbs Farm Co Ltd

Cobbs Farm supports local charities across multiple regions through weekly donations, fundraising events, and volunteer opportunities. They emphasise sustainability, sourcing over 80% of food from local & British producers and maintaining a community focus. Recent expansions include new farm shops and cafés, while their staff-centric approach highlights fair wages and robust training programs.

Priory Farm Estate

Priory Farm excels in community support, regularly donating to local food banks and shelters. As a key local employer and family destination, it stands out with its state-of-the-art Butchery and Alcohol departments. The farm champions independent products, offering a wide selection of local and artisan goods, from cheeses to spirits.
