The Westmalle brewing tradition has a history of over two centuries. In Westmalle brewing is not a purely economic activity but rather, it is a service to the community. Manual labour must make a contribution to a person’s well-being and development. The Rule of St Benedict states that manual labour has a ‘spiritual value’ and imposes specific conditions for doing business.
The Westmalle brewery is part of a ‘special economy’ in which trading is deliberately carried out on a small scale. Revenues should support the cost of living of the abbey, and human and environmental costs are also taken into account. The brewery also helps to support people in need.
