1701 Luxury Handcrafted Nougat

INSPIRED BY THE FRENCH

Our name, 1701, pays homage to the year nougat was first made in Montelimar, France. 

Our French inspiration can be seen throughout our products, ingredient quality, and appreciation for the finer things in life.

But our real story started 80 years ago when Dawn Leggat Landman, our founder’s maternal grandmother, was born. Her inspiration led her daughter, Lianne Scher, to develop our signature nougat recipe in 2015 – the same one we still lovingly make today.

Inspired by her mother, Lianne developed her own way of giving to others, using food and sweet things as her artistic canvas. 

With cordon bleu training and a passion for the culinary arts, she developed the extraordinary 1701 nougat recipe. 

From here, the 1701 family grew, with Lianne’s son Nick Scher joining the team as MD and mother-daughter team Giovanna and Antoinetta heading up product development.

We value fresh, local, and high-quality ingredients. 

That’s why we source all our nuts and honey straight from a farm in Mpumalanga, South Africa. You’ll also find our production facilities and a team of skilled bakers and tastemakers here, crafting our luxury products to meet the highest of standards.
