Lunigiana honey is the first Italian honey to obtain the Protected Designation of Origin - DOP from the European Union, the highest recognition of the typicality of a product. The production area includes the 14 Municipalities of Lunigiana, whose typically mountainous landscape has a very varied vegetation with a particular diffusion of woods, acacia and chestnut, very valuable plant essences from an apistic point of view.

This fact, combined with a tradition that dates back with certainty to the end of the 1400s and the low degree of industrialization, determines, in Lunigiana, an environment suitable for carrying out quality beekeeping with the production of acacia and chestnut honey with characteristics excellent chemical-physical and organoleptic properties. There are 45 producers who have joined the DOP certification for a total of over 4300 beehives
